Ass the fall semester nears conclusion, I am pleased with the college’s continuing progress. Carroll is a thriving institution. I want to thank our dedicated administration, faculty, and staff for their hard work in support of the college.
The college has made great progress towards creating a healthy environment in which faculty, staff, and students can also thrive. With the growing emphasis in the health community about the negative effects of smoking, the college has responded to local and national initiatives to become smoke and tobacco-free.
Several years ago, the college implemented a policy that allows smoking only in designated areas. In September, 2008, the college took the next step when the Board of Trustees approved a policy to make the entire campus smoke and tobacco-free. The new policy officially goes into effect on January 2, 2009.
This issue of Today carries an article with more details about the new policy and how Carroll will help make this change successful.
The Smoke and Tobacco-Free Campus Committee has been working to implement communications and provide resources to support the policy. Throughout the fall semester, there have been promotional materials and signage to inform people of the coming change. In addition, smoking cessation resources and classes are being offered as part of the college’s Wellness Program.
I appreciate the support for this new initiative from everyone involved, and particularly appreciate the work of the campus committee overseeing implementation of our new policy.
